Concordia’s Global Network responds to devastating earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand
22nd February 2011
Christchurch has been hit by another devastating earthquake on Tuesday 21st February lunchtime at 12.51 hrs local time (23.51 hrs GMT on Monday), centered approximately 10km (6.2 miles) south-east of the city. It was a 6.3 magnitude rated earthquake that has caused extensive damage and has resulted in a full evacuation of the city.
Local press are reporting that buildings and houses have collapsed and the city's iconic cathedral had been destroyed. Power to the city is currently cut and phone lines are down. The damage is far worse than last year with lots of structural damage and parts of the CBD have been flattened.
The city was still recovering from the 7.1 magnitude rated earthquake that hit on 3rd September 2010. Since September there have been hundreds of aftershocks and these have slowed the recovery process. Today’s earthquake will only add to the challenges being faced within New Zealand.
Our local New Zealand associate, supported by Concordia’s experienced Global CAT response team, is currently in Christchurch and is monitoring the situation.
